In this cluster, students learn that daily weather conditions are not the result of random occurrences, but from global systems that can be predicted on a short-term and a seasonal basis.

Weather: Dragon of chaos
The Nature of Things takes a look at weather's chaotic character and how modern society is coping. We hear firsthand accounts from people who have survived some of the most ruthless weather conditions. Bob Howard and Ken Osborne describe how the cottage they were in was suddenly lifted from its foundations and deposited in a lake by a tornado. Documentary footage shows a small community literally washed away by the Saguenay river flood and we hear accounts from those that lived through the 1998 ice storm that destroyed the power supply of five million people. Viewers are given insight into how these weather conditions arise: how a tornado forms, the structure of a hurricane and the special circumstances that can lead to an ice storm or a catastrophic flood.
